Our founder, Lindsey Cumoletti, is a Registered Dietitian and New York State Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist specializing in medical nutrition therapy, with a passionate focus on chronic kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension.
In the United States, more than 14% of our population is suffering from a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, and nearly 10% of our population is living with diabetes. Not to mention, 1 out of every 3 adults have high blood pressure, clearly something’s got to give!
I started my academic career in nutrition when I was 25, but my passion for medical nutrition therapy started way before that.
Growing up in a family with a strong genetic presence of heart disease, there was always an important emphasis on a healthy diet and physical activity. As a teenager, I knew what foods were high in cholesterol, the difference between “healthy fats” and “saturated fats” and I was introduced to just how important proper nutrition is in preventing and treating chronic disease.
I pursued an undergraduate degree in human biology, followed by a Post-baccalaureate in Nutritional Sciences and a Masters of Science degree in Applied Nutrition. My first career as a Registered Dietitian was as a renal nutrition specialist in a fast paced dialysis unit. It was here that my passion for medical nutrition therapy evolved into something greater.
I watched as patients came and went and I learned something new from each and every one of them. What they all had in common though, (what WE all have in common), is the need for FOOD! We have unique bodies, unique genetic needs, but we all need to eat to survive. What I found many patients didn’t know, was how nutrition plays a role in their disease state.
Nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t mean you can no longer have your favorite foods, and it doesn’t mean anything needs to be completely eliminated. I am not here to “put you on a diet”. I am here to educate you; to guide you on your journey to your best state of health. I am here to answer your questions, simplify that “article you read about sugar” and provide you support. Managing chronic disease is not always about weight loss, often it is more about knowing the role that foods and nutrients play in managing your disease.
